• ask的基本意思是“问,询问”,指对不知道或不明白的事情、道理、情况提出问题请别人解答,或向别人打听、探询以便了解,所问之事与被询问者可能有关,也可能无关。ask还可作“请求,要求”解,指说明自己的请求和愿望,以获得所要的东西或所要达到的目的,有期望答复(特别是肯定的答复)的含义。ask还可引申表示“邀请”。ask是最普通的不带感情色彩的用词,使用范围广,无论是下级对上级,晚辈对长辈,学生对老师均可使用。
• ask用作及物动词,其后可接名词、代词、带或不带疑问词的动词不定式或that/wh-从句作宾语, that从句中常使用虚拟式。
• ask还可接以动词不定式充当补足语的复合宾语。ask也可接双宾语,这时两个宾语都是直接宾语,指物的直接宾语可由名词、代词、带疑问词的动词不定式或wh-从句充当。ask接两个宾语转换成被动结构时多以表示人的宾语作主语,且by可省略。此外还可接以副词或介词短语充当补足语的复合宾语。

• ask在大部分情况下是指“问”，如ask her name（问她的名字），ask the way（问路），但在于price搭配时，表达两种意思，“问价”和“讨价”。I asked her the price. 这里指问价。I asked the price of ￥20. 这里指讨价。
• ask后可带直接宾语和间接宾语，如ask his name和ask him。也可带双宾语，但是要注意将间接宾语（指人的词）先放在前面，中间不需要任何介词连接。She asked me my opinion. 她问我的意见。
• ask后可接of，但多半情况下，省略of。如句子I asked him a question比I asked a question of him的用法普遍，而 She has a question to ask (of) you和she asked (of) me中的of均可省略。不过，在特定的句子中，of 不可省略。I am afraid it is too much to ask of him. 句中的ask做请求的意思。
